Happy and Healthy Prawns
It is a little known fact that prawns are a power house! We found that they are packed with so many nutrients and minerals that are crucial to our diet. Read on to find out more!
What makes prawns healthy?
Essential nutrients
Prawns are strong in macronutrients. It has been found that 100g of prawns contains about 25 grams of protein, which is roughly the same as a similar amount of chicken or beef. By doing the math, that means one of our 200g packs contains an astounding 50 grams of protein.
Not only that, but the same portion of prawns have less than 2 grams of both carbohydrates and fats. This is 18 times less than a similar serving of salmon. So, if you want to gain muscle mass and reduce fat, these are an incredible food source that allows you to do that.
Essential vitamins:
Prawns are heavily abundant in the following vitamins:
Vitamin A, which supports healthy eyesight, immune function, skin, bones and teeth.
Vitamins B-6, B-12, which help the body produce energy, build muscle and replenish red blood cells.
Vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant to protect cell membranes. In fact, it has been found that prawns contain nearly 22 times the vitamin E found in beef, and 19 times that of chicken.
Essential Minerals:
Prawns are full of the following minerals:
Iron, which is a mineral that is essential for the body to effectively distribute oxygen.
Selenium, which is one of the most effective antioxidants at maintaining healthy cells.
Zinc, which is needed for the development of a healthy immune system
Magnesium, phosphorous and copper, all of which is needed to maintain strong bones.
Not so Fatty acids
While prawns do contain high levels of cholesterol, they do not lead to higher cholesterol levels in the body due to their healthy fat profile. It has been found that prawns are a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These fats also include the omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to lower your heart attack risk. In fact, our 200g of prawns contribute to 26% of your recommended weekly intake of omega-3.
What makes our prawns healthy?
Prawns make wonderful toxicity indicators. They are often used as biomarkers to ascertain the pollution levels of the water which means that consumers may absorb these toxins by eating contaminated crustaceans. It if for this reason it is a good idea to find a safe source of edible prawns.
We are proud to say that our ponds are a safe source. Not only is this reinforced by the strong relationships we have with the environmental organisations we work with, but also that we take care in ensuring our waters are clean, especially as we culture our prawns using traditional extensive farming.
