Growing a Greener World
This article aims to provide you with updates on our sustainable development initiatives and give you a sneak peek of new projects we have in store and how you can get involved and help grow a greener world.
Our vision
We, at The Happy Prawn Co., pride ourselves on producing 100% natural and 100% responsible Indonesian Black Tiger Prawns for the UK seafood market. Although we often place a focus on our zero-input, natural farming methods, we believe it is time to have an in-depth discussion on our sustainability focus.
Our vision rests on the same sustainable development goals implemented by the United Nations. By taking into account the realities of our Indonesian farmers and fellows, we have come together to create a development plan which seeks to promote their growth and mitigate any drawbacks that could exacerbate a downturn or stagnation.
Since inception, we have tried to make sure that our practices are both responsible and sustainable and will continue to maintain that in the coming years.
Our development plan
Indonesia is classified by the World Bank (2020) as an emerging, lower-to-middle income country. In terms of development, a 20 year plan was enacted by the government of Indonesia and segmented into 5-year medium goals.
We find ourselves in the 3rd phase, 2015-2020, which calls for infrastructure development and social assistance programs related to education and healthcare, with the final phase yet to be released.
Despite the impressive levels of progress achieved by the incredible people who dedicate their lives to improving Indonesia, there are still considerable challenges that need to be addressed in order to achieve Indonesia’s goals.
This is where we feel the role of business, especially those that are socially-conscious, becomes crucial.
By incorporating the goals on the UN, the government of Indonesia and our own sustainability goals, we have created the following plan and initiatives to boost welfare for all.
Figure 1. The implemented development structure showing the individuals and organisations we work with.
From the diagram above, the arrows represent the relationship we have with the organisations and individuals we work with. The dual arrows represent a mutual exchange in ideas and initiatives. The single arrow used for the industry, depicts us conveying our sustainability initiatives and outcomes to those included in the industry.
Figure 2. The active projects we are currently running or supporting
The diagram above represents the many community and environmental projects we currently are overseeing in Indonesia. These are in line with the UN development goals, the Indonesian Governments goals, our own goals, the realities of Indonesia and, most importantly, the needs of the people and animals who are affected.
With great happiness, we are able to say that our projects are prospering. This is due to us mitigating any potential drawbacks by maintaining flexibility in our implementation processes, effective communication with those involved and constant observation of the outcomes of any methods used in order to improve the current state of the development stage.
By taking those aspects into considerable account, we are able to look to support new initiatives that are spearheaded by those determined to make a difference, whether they are local members of the community, corporate figures, or governmental officials.
In the coming year, we looking to shift our focus on projects that support societies most vulnerable, these include: Orphans/impoverished children, empowering those with disabilities and expanding our social outreach to the UK and working alongside some people-centric local organisations.
How you can get involved
1. Let us know of any initiatives that mean something to you or kick start your own, maybe we could work together and build a better tomorrow.
2. Support the campaigns of the organisations we proudly work with, this could be done actively or passively, such as discussing with a friend or loved one.
3. Continue to support our brand and make those around you happy.
