How To Be A Connoisseur Of The Crustacean
What are prawns? How long have we been eating them? Why do some people like them and others don’t? This article seeks to inform you about everything you need to know about prawns, as well as black tigers, with the hope that by the end you will be a connoisseur of the crustacean.
Prawns are considered one of life’s little luxuries.
When you see a prawn on a menu, it rarely has a cheap price associated with it. You may think a prawn is a prawn, but truth be told, there are many different types.
Researchers have attempted to categorise them in order to make it easier for those that are new to the seafood industry. For instance, you may see the words wild, cultured, freshwater or warm-water thrown around in discussion.
However, it is hard to classify as crossover is inevitable, so it is easier to distinguish them through specie traits.
Indonesian Black Tiger prawns
We at the Happy Prawn Co. proudly supply Indonesian black tiger prawns, Penaeus Monodon, and these are often dubbed as ‘the Rolls Royce of prawns’.
These prawns are warm-water prawns, so only grow in pacific waters. Recently, they have been sightings of them as far as the Gulf states of the USA, but only in relative quantities.
These are big prawns and the larger sizes are often are used as lobster substitutes. This is because these prawns can grow up to 30-40cm max!
This often leaves people wondering if they are langoustines, but we can assure you they are not. Langoustines are similar in size but are lobsters. Indeed, this does make them small for a lobster as they can grow up to 50cm max. But lobsters have large, meatier claws, unlike prawns.
Not only that, black tigers are known to be meatier than langoustines and tend to not leave a fishy aftertaste. Moreover, black tigers are also associated with aquaculture.
We can’t speak for all, but we use extensive practises. This means we work alongside nature and not artificially feed or give antibiotics/other chemicals to our prawns.
With that being said, there are actually more than one type of prawn in the Panaeus category, not just black tigers. Like with all species, there are sub-categories. That’s why some tiger prawns may look different in comparison with one another.
Either way, there’s no denying that when cooked, these prawns will eventually have their infamous red and white stripes, their saturation in orange may differ, but there’s no denying that they swill be striking!
