Rosida’s New Role
Rosida takes on a new role as a Non-Executive Director for Way Kambas National Park. Read on to find out more about her role and how you can get involved.
Last Week, Rosida was appointed as a Non-Executive Director for Way Kambas National Park. This role primarily sees her working to ensure the stakeholder’s interests are incorporated within the Park’s strategic development. This includes promoting reforestation in Sumatra, working alongside the various wildlife organisations, which particularly includes the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) and supporting the development in working alongside international environmental organisations as well.
This might sound familiar, as developing these strategic objectives also lie at the heart of The Happy Prawn Co. Indeed, it could be viewed that Rosida’s new appointment is putting a formal title to all of her already amazing efforts. However, this new position will see her lead and ensure that those objectives will be fulfilled at an unprecedented level.
With a smile beaming from her face, Rosida is extremely excited about becoming more hands on in conservational initiatives in Sumatra.
Way Kambas National Park
Way Kambas National Park is an ASEAN Heritage Park that spans nearly 1,300 square kilometres across Indonesia’s Lampung province. This vast swamp and lowland rainforest is home to 406 bird species and 50 different species of mammals. In fact, the Sumatran rhinos, tigers and elephants all reside in the park and 3 species that are critically endangered. It should be mentioned that these mammals are under the watchful eye of conservationists. The rhinos are under the protected care of the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary, whilst the elephants are cared under the Elephant Conservation Centre and Tigers receive support from the Sumatran Tiger Project.
Already amassing support from other conversation groups around the world, the Park is still combatting various threats to its ecosystem. It should be noted that even though illegal deforestation is an issue, the rate of deforestation occurs is 0.109% per year. Yet, the Park has issued a reforestation program to negate the rate of deforestation and ensure the species that reside within the area have a sufficient amount of living space.
Another serious issue is the poaching of critically endangered animals. Indeed, Environmental law Enforcers patrol the area around the clock. They actively search for traps, nets and illegal poachers that venture in the forest for Elephant Ivory, Rhino horn or Tiger blood. Although these numbers have reduced, possibly due to the government crackdown through extensive jail time and hefty fines, the patrollers still face poachers.
Nevertheless, Way Kambas National Park remains one of the most biodiverse places in the world! If you ever get the chance to visit, the Park is not only alive with the sounds of animals but also vibrant by the many species of floral and fauna.
How you can get involved
There are many ways in which you can help the efforts of the Park aside from donating.
These could be:
1. Volunteering at the various sanctuaries within the Park.
If you’re in the mood for a life changing experience and up for the challenge, Why not help the rangers whilst spending some quality time with the animals?
2. Helping to drive awareness through social media, blogs, articles.
If you have a penchant for all things digital, why not drive awareness to the efforts these incredible people do to conserve the endangered species and environment?
3. Encouraging local initiatives with the Park in mind.
If you’re passionate about the environment and love getting the community together, why not drive awareness to protecting one of the world’s most biodiverse areas?
